at the point of hating iPhoto!!!

its like 3500 photos I've take, imported to iPhoto, and organized, edited etc.. and I'm really disappointed with it!..

it waits alot when I move from one pic to the other, waits alot when I'm rotating pics, usually have problems when I connect my Canon S50, takes a long time importing pics...

is there anyone with the same opinions, or am I making a mistake with my 12"pb??? Cant understand how a mac program works like this????

Most people agree that iPhoto works best of you keep your library size down to under 1000. You can use programs like Library Manger (see Version Tracker) to set up multiple libraries and switch between them.

but why, I mean, my itunes is working with more than 4000 songs, and works like a dream.. but iPhoto... oh god! what is the purpose of using it, if i wont be able to manage all my photos together with no problem???

iPhoto sucks. It's a piece of crap. Yes, I'm serious. Yes, it really is.

iTunes is a different beast altogether--years and years of development, as well as a system where each file is not loaded into memory at all times (the Library in iTunes is just a reference to each file, which plays when you click on it, whereas iPhoto loads each and every photo into memory).

To get the best performance out of iPhoto, you would need as much RAM as your photos take up altogether. That would mean a G5 with 8 GB of RAM might suffice... maybe...

Try iView Media, or perhaps even the Finder (it's more capable than you think, with the addition of third-party plugins)... or better yet, try PathFinder, which has image-editing functions built in.

iPhoto is a nightmare... unquestionably the worst software Apple makes that still hasn't gotten any better (Backup would be, but Backup 2 actually works now, so...)

I like iPhoto

First remove borders (and shadows) from your pictures. Next make the pictures smaller. Also, I would suggest burning pictures you're done with to CD or DVD. I burn a disk whenever I get 650MB of pictures. Then I delete the library, and start anew.

"Make the pictures smaller"...? What if you just want a program that can WORK with the pictures you have?

Removing borders/shadows helps marginally on fast machines, but really... how many photos do you have that you still say you like iPhoto?

I think this might have been a reference to smaller thumbnails. That's how I read it. Then again, maybe I shouldn't guess.

I think the biggest fault in iPhoto is not performance, but sharing. Burning to a CD or DVD makes an iPhoto disc. How stupid is that? Jobs talks about easy sharing, but I have to resort to using another application when I want to make photo discs to send to family members who have PCs. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot and declaring an app DOA.

Ditto on iView Media Pro. Unfortunately, it now costs $160. I bought it when it was ~$70. But, the new version is fantastic. iPhoto was not designed for professional level performance. It is a consumer app for everyday photo management. iView Media Pro is industrial strength. They have a $30 version, but it lacks to many features iPhoto has.

It sounds like you might need something better than iPhoto. iPhoto, like iMovie an iDVD, are meant for the casual home user. And to those ends I think they are great apps. Unfortunetly they can be quickly out grown.

And I haven't noticed my Canon s50 taking any longer or shorter to import pics into iPhoto than any other digicam I've used. I mean, it's a USB 1.1 connection and if you've got a full 256mb CF card it's gonna take a second or two.

thanx very very much for all the repliers and help!..

well, what I mean was that when I connect my S50, it waits alot even recognizing that its connected.. but I dont have the same problem when I connect it to my awful pc desktop.. it recognizes the s50 as a harddrive, and all I do is copying the files to the places I like..

the other point is that, I've tried making the thumbnails smaller without shadows and sexy borders and etc, but it just doesnt effect at all!..

and the other point is that, I will not give up managing all my photos together!.. Writing photos to cds to ease iPhotos job is not more than tragy-comedy! it's like writing your music to cds and looking for cds when you wanna listen to something different you like!.. doesnt it sound funny??

is there any other recommendation about any sharewares or free apps that I can use a bit more fluently??

I, too, am dissatisfied with how iPhoto handles files. It's really cumbersome to jump between libraries. I am wondering if PE is any better at handling large photo files.....or if it even does it at
all. I was thinking about switching to this also because I want more latitude in image enhancement. Does anyone have any experience with it?

PE is an image manipulation program. it's not an image organization program like iPhoto...

for the original poster, like others, i suggest either getting a more professional grade app or splitting your libraries.

Does Photoshop Elements have Browse mode? (Full PS 7 does...)...

I'd use that--much faster than iPhoto's method, and pretty damn efficient at it, as well.

if I remember correctly, Adobe makes a thing called Photoshop Albums which is basically an iPhoto knockoff. Not sure about the speed.

Oh yeah, it's only for PCs
