Way too many personal questions.
Just look around you. Everyone nowadays has a smartphone and it's pretty clear how people hold them.

I use an iPhone 4 held with both hands two inches away from my face without glasses as I'm viewing porn. Oh yeah - I'm 95 years old too.

Anything else?

Would you like to know if I dress to the left or right?

Well, those were not the replies I anticipated. LOL.

I don't work for anyone related to this survey in any way. I am trying to decide between an iPhone 12 and a 12 mini (which you can verify by looking at my two previous posts/comments.) I just joined the board the other day for the specific reason.

Thinking about the decision I realized I would probably want to hold the mini closer to see the screen clearly and/or I needed a stronger eyeglass prescription. So I wondered if that was unusual. I did see some discussion of the mini being more suitable for younger users due the the smaller print. One thing led to another and I came up with the questions.

And yes, under normal circumstances I would just look around next time I was out somewhere, but in case you haven't noticed there is a pandemic on and some of us are under lockdown.

OK, you got me. I am a secret agent of the lizard people doing market research for our upcoming invasion of earth. 😆

Provided you have the same text size selected my guess is your hold any phone in a similar distance. You just see more text/ screen with a bigger display.

I don’t believe that’s quite true. I think the iPhone 12 mini has a different scaling factor than the regular 12, so that things are slightly smaller. I also think there is a way to adjust that in settings.

Here is a technical explanation:

One quote:

What this means as a user is that the on-screen content of the 12 Mini in standard scaling isn’t really a scaled down version of the on-screen content of the 12/12 Pro — it’s a scaled down version of the on-screen content of an iPhone 11 Pro (or XS or X).

Fair point but I’m referring to setting a comfortable text size in settings- I should have phrased that better. If that’s the same size after you found your own sweet spot of reading comfort I doubt there will be much difference.

Of course my approach doesn’t take any standard scaling into account, thanks for the link.

Doesn't each individual develop their own comfort level, and "holding" distance, depending on their use?
Personal visual acuity (which might be one prime factor for how you hold a phone, including distance for viewing), as well as what you, personally, use your iPhone for, wouldn't really affect how someone else uses their phone.
I think if the OP needs a different/stronger prescription for using an iPhone, then that would be something to talk over with your own eye professional. I would think that is not unusual to need an adjustment of your own optical prescription, depends on your use (not someone else's)

I’ll try to help. I am in my mid-40s. I wear contacts to adjust my distance vision to 20/20 and have just started to need readers for smaller print. I got the iPhone mini and loved the physical size/weight of it but the smaller text made use too difficult. Yes, I did try display zoom which was great for my Home Screen and some apps, but most apps were not optimized for zoom display and appeared with black bars across the top and bottom (which to me defeated the purpose of having more screen real estate in a smaller form factor since that wasn’t true for most of my apps). I went back to my 11 pro and if I had it to do again I would have gotten the 12 strictly due to my aging eyes. Hope that helps!
