Hi everbody,

I bought the new Apple TV and suffer from the HDMI handshake problem described here (inverting colors with a Philips TV):

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2600405&start=0&tstart=15

I am now asking myself: Do I send the device back to Apple within the 14 days or do I wait for a new firmware? If this is NO hardware problem, I have no problem still waiting a few weeks for a fix - however, if this is a hardware thing, I am afraid Apple won't accept my return after waiting for too long ...

Anybody here can guess if this is hardware related or fixable with a new firmware? Thanks in advance!

my guess is that it's a software issue, because it's only happening with a very limited number of TV brands. whether or not and when apple will offer a software fix is another question though...

i'm glad i got a new tv just before getting the apple tv so I could get the TV exchanged... :)

Thanks for your answer. I also hope that this is a software issue and that this will be fixed - have a great Philips TV which can't be exchanged anymore as it is a few months old ... (Ad, of course, as much as I love Apple products and defend them: The solution can't be "buy another TV" - although I'm afraid this would be the exact email response from Steve Jobs ... :)

Yeah, I got lucky that I'd only just bought the tv... I emailed Sony to see if they're aware of the issue and are planning to do anything about it, their response: yes, we're aware, no we won't do anything about it. And that was on a fairly new model!!! Couldn't believe it, so decided to return it...

Wouldn't want to deal with Sony customer service of the tv ever developed a fault!

Well, to be fair I guess it's pretty safe to say that this is on Apples side to fix the problem. Every other HDMI device on my TV works fine. I hope they will do so and keep the AT2 for now ...

It depends on how you look at it. I have two Apple TV's connected to different TV's. One suffers from this problem and, if I swap them over then the problem obviously stays with the TV. Based on that evidence you would reasonably conclude that the TV is to blame.

This problem is a compatibility issue between the Apple TV and some TV models. It is in the interest of all the manufacturers involved to solve it, and I'd be disappointed to find that Sony aren't at least looking into it.

Well it REALLY depends how you look at it - the other way round would be: Every other HDMI device on this TV works 100% correctly (including my old Apple TV), so Apple had the chance to do so, too, but messed up something in the firmware ...

We'll have to wait and hope that this will be sorted out.

Yes, I understand this, the point has been made many a time, and I have a similar situation.

I was merely pointing out that the tables can be turned.

No manufacturers have a duty to correct this compatibility problem, but it is in their interests to do so. Apple are taking a lot of stick (and rightly in my opinion for not having spotted the problem before release), but as far as I can tell, they are the only ones who are at least making the right noises about finding a solution.

I understand you and it was no offense. (I don't think you understood it that way, but just to be sure.) I hope like you that there will be a solution somehow provided by Apple or Philips (in my case) or both. I really like my new ATV and I don't want to give it back ...

No offense taken.

I think that Apple will come up with a solution eventually. I've kept hold of the equipment on that basis as I really like the TV and Apple TV involved.

Luckily for me, the Apple TV works fine on our main TV. The problem TV is one which isn't used all that often, and then mostly for music, so the issue is bearable. If it had been our main TV then we wouldn't have been able to stick with it.
