ATEN USB-RS232 adaptor

I have a new Mac mini that I would like to connect to my old CP/M box with an exiting RS232 console cable (yep, dumb I know) so I was planning on using screen < /dev/tty"whateverdevicename" but can't find a tty to use.
If I unplug the device and check for /dev/tty* and then plug it in and do the list again the list is identical.
Can anyone tell me how to use these devices on Macs that are without serial ports.

My USB Serial adapter creates a /dev/cu* device. I use ZOC which automatically seems to find the serial ports and lets you select between them.

I don't have an adapter with me right now to check, but I also seem to recall it logging something to /var/log/system.log too - I believe there was a Mac OS X driver for the USB serial dongle I was using.

You probably need a kext to be able to use it.

Most of the usb-to-serial cables I've come across all use the Prolific PL2303 chip, here is an updated driver for that;

Thanks for the help. I installed the driver but didn't see any change so not sure what to do there. I have loaded XP :-( in a vbox and hyperterm sees the port so will suffer along these lines until I sus the right way to do it.

You might just need to get an adapter that has drivers available for 10.6/Intel.

just FYI I have found that all the esoteric USB stuff works a treat using virtualbox and because I decided to move on my Windoze hardware in favour of the mini I installed Win7 using bootcamp so run all my oddball USB stuff natively.
Also I decided to shrink my xp vbox image to 5G, down from 80G and use it as a quickie way to get to my CP/M box using the RS232 USB adaptor and my USB logic analyser (a Intronix Logicport (awesome gadget IMO)) rather than rebooting. So now I think I have the best of all worlds. Mac OS for most everything, my vbox for a quick change of direction and win7 for better graphics on gaming and to run the mircosoft only stuff I'm stuck with.
