Hi guy right now i have mac pro 2009 runing davinchi resolve with ati 5770 and gtx 550ti in my mac with 2 external power 8 pin i believe cables. i can get 2 gtx680 4gb for 300. Since i don't use my optical bay dvd player can i use that power to run 2gtx 680 and ati 5770 without external power and i will have to modify my mac to fit 3th card.

Did anybody do this type of thing?

Thanks

No, the dvd power sockets do not supply enough power. They are I believe 46 or 56 watts max each, where the 680 requires two 75 watt 6pin, or perhaps one 75 watt 6pin + 150 watt 8pin cable.

Your will need to use your external power supply to feed them, and leave the internal mac cable for the 5770.

I don't know anyone running two GTX680 4GB cards on the MP power supply.

However, there are people running two GTX970 4GB cards on the MP power supply using nothing more than y-cables to split the existing GPU power leads from the motherboard. Apparently the GTX970 is power efficient enough that this works.

The price difference between the 680/4GB and the 970/4GB is not that much, so you might consider doing that if you want two cards.
