This is kind of a continuance of my last thread.
So my ATI 5870 fan finally bit the dust- I'm not really that surprised, since the axle friction on the turbine has been steadily increasing up until today, where the fan wouldn't even spin up and no amount of manual coaxing could get it to keep turning. The bearing is simply toast.
I'm not too excited to replace the fan myself. I'm aware that I can, but this is a last resort for me. Right now I'm trying to figure out what my options are, apart from fixing the card myself and buying a new unit.
I've been researching this type of failure on the internet and reports of the exact same thing happening to others with Apple branded or non-Apple branded reference ATI 5870 cards are numerous. Mostly it seems to centre around one type of turbine since there are apparently two manufactures- one of which seems to have produced a series of turbines doomed to fail early.
Unfortunately my system is not under warranty and I'm having a hell of a time even talking to someone at Apple without their system telling me to **** off and pay $59.99 for a one-time tech support call instead.
What I'm wondering is this...
Is there any way that Apple might replace my GPU if I get a hold of them? I know they have no obligation to, and that I'm the moron for not buying Applecare (I seriously thought I did, because spending $9K on a system without Applecare is beyond moronic- that's somewhere in epic fail territory).
I'm just wondering if since this seems to be a widespread issue, that they might do something about it if I can get someone on the line. It's not like this card was abused or something- in fact, it has been cleaned out monthly (including the 5870 turbine and innards through the rear vent) with compressed air. The inside and outside is literally spotless, so it's not a dust related issue.
