Hello,

I would like to compare my 3D performance with other users here:

System: MacPro 4,1 8core 2.26GHz, 12GB, XFX ATI 5870 1GB (latest drivers activated by Multibeast)

Cinebench R11.5: 24.7 points (seems to be not very much)
SC2 in 1900x1200 and extreme details (all max!): initial 25-35fps, with 100 units on the screen approx 5-10fps (unplayable)

Cinebench R11.5: 24.7 points (seems to be not very much)

Agreed. But then again I'm pretty sceptical about the OpenCL benchmark of Cinebench in general.
For example, my 2.26GHz scores 22.5 with the GT120 and 24.8 with the 4870. Too little difference for these cards.

Hi,

I would be very interested in results of users, that are using the Apple ATI 5870 and a MacPro. I've heard about problems with no NUMA Support (30% performance loss).

All in all it cannot be true, that I am not able to play SC2 with 1600x1200 with medium details. In situations with ober 100 units on the map the FPS goes below 15. With my old GT120 I had about 1-4 FPS (also unplayable).

When you say "latest drivers activated by Multibeast" are you talking about different drivers than the Mac OS X 10.6.7 native drivers ?

Sad to see but truth. Please game with Win.

Here is my 3.33 6-core and 5870, 10GB Memory.
Catalyst 11.2 (I think) I ran the tests months ago.

Cinebench r11.5:

Win 7 64-bit:
69.14 OpenGL, 8.82 MultiCPU, 1.20 Single

OS 10.6.5:
35.01 OpenGL, 8.94 MultiCPU, 1.19 Single

How... what...

I get 80 fps in SC2 at that resolution. 50 fps at slowest. Official Apple 5870. Maxed settings. In 10.6.7.

What are you guys doing wrong?

Maybe my Mac Pro is just made of magic.

Hello goMac,

at which resolution? 1920x1200 and Extreme Details (=Full)? Which CPU? Maybe I have the wrong drivers (10.7 beta activated by multibeast - I also tried ATI_updated_drivers.pkg and some drivers I got from a mate - but screen is black when using these).

It seems, that the current available drivers for non-Apple 5870 are not good enough.

1900x1200. Extreme details. I have every setting maxed. 8x2.8 ghz. Portal 2 also runs with every setting maxed including AA. I never checked the framerate, but never noticed it drop either.

I think you've borked your drivers. Shouldn't you be able to use that card with the real 10.5.7 drivers? I don't think you need hacked drivers for it.

Hello,

In deed, I didn't try the old 10.6 drivers. Will do it later (happyliy I backuped them).

Even with the lowest details and 1280x1024 it is not possible to play it without problems (the fps falls also below 30).

Yeah, I could be an outlier, but there is no way it should be that bad. I was seeing better performance on my old GeForce 8800.

Cinebench does not test GPU performance, it tests CPU performance. Notice that the Cinebench window is always a fixed, low resolution and it doesn't use AA or AF. Yes, it reports OpenGL scores, but that's not very useful.

If you want to bench your GPU, run some timedemos on your games and record the fps, you'll get much more useful results.

Still having massive performance issues. SC2 with 1900x1200, medium details with 500-600 units on the screen: 3-8FPS (absolutely unplayable!).

Do I have to buy a 12core 2.93GHz 64GB RAM and a PCIe SSD to get the game performed over 50FPS constantly?

Cannot be true, that the 2009 flagship (8core 2.26, 12GB Tripple Channeled, OCW-SSD'ed) MacPro is not able to handle SC2 with the reference designed ATI 5870.

Something is wrong with your system. Your specs completely blow away the recommended system specs for SC2. Others are benching much higher. You've done something wrong with the drivers or non-apple video card.

Your system has been totally destroyed. I'd reinstall if I were you.

Installing those third party drivers was asking for trouble. It sounds like you've borked your hardware acceleration entirely.

Edit: Multibeast looks like it's for Hackintoshes. You've likely totally messed up your system. Reinstall.

I was playing on my 2008 Mac Pro with a 5870 this weekend and was having absolutely no trouble at maxed options.
