I recently bought (it's on it's way) a used ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card (Apple model #- MB999ZM/A) with mini-display port for use with my early- 2008 Mac Pro, and my new NEC PA 302W 10-bit color capable monitor. I'm running EL Capitan so I guess I'll have any updated driver for the HD 4870 that Apple may have provided. Does anyone know if the HD 4870 will allow my NEC monitor to operate in 10-bit color ( with apps supporting 10-bit color, of course) ? If the answer is no, I may be able to return the card.

If it comes to that, can anyone recommend a graphics card that will work in my early-2008 Mac Pro with its' pcie 2.0 x 16 slots, and support 10-bit color? Thanks a lot, Jack

There are almost zero apps that have a 10 bit color viewport on OSX.

Edit:

Photoshop's major update this week now supports 10bit colour on OSX but I no longer run El Capitan so I can't test it.

Thanks for the news and the screen save. That's good news about Photoshop. I understand Preview and Photo can run in 10-bit color in El Capitan. More apps to follow by and by I'm sure. Hoping my HD 4870 card works out... but, we'll see! Best Wishes!

Hi again, Still researching things. Can you tell me what version of PS the screen shot in your July 4, 2015 post is from? Thanks, Jack

Preview, Photos, and Davinci Resolve all support it right now. And I assume FCP X will be getting it too in a future update. Expect many video/photo apps to be getting 10 bit updates in the coming months.

Cool if your work was actually truly hampered before by 8bit (of course I find the idea of using Photos for colour accurate work a laughable idea) But I gave up on El Capitan for all the reasons people are angry with it.

I don't use El Capitan either, a lot of my workflow is still dependent on yosemite and the USB and TB cluster**** on 10.11 is scaring me away. Hardware options for 10bit output have been around for years, thats what we've always used. Blackmagic mini monitor and such.
