ATI RADEON R9 290 in a Mac Pro 3.1

Hello all, first post

I have just changed jobs and my new employer requires me to use an ATI RADEON R9 290 graphics card. Due to the large power requirements of this card I doubt it will work, but I have the card here now to test and my new computer won't be ready for at least 2 months.

Will I do any damage to my MacPro 2008 by putting the card in? Might it work?

I have bought a 6 to 8pin adapter for the power but struggled to get an exact power spec for the card, here's what I was able to find:
minimum system power - 500W card power 250w

Any help would be appreciated, Thank you.

EDIT - the manufacturer is Gigabyte if that helps

If it has to be for Windows only, you're fine.
290 won't work in OS X at all, may also cause KP due to lack of drivers.

Why does your employer REQUIRES you to use a ATI RADEON R9 290?

Thanks for the feedback. I had a feeling drivers could be and issue but heard ATI were generally well supported.

I think the employer probably bought a bunch of these cards in bulk for cheap, hence the 'requirement'.

I'll try it on my bootcamp partition, and if that goes well on my mavericks install too.

I'll report back for any users interested.

R9 290?

Did you ever get an R9 working in a tower Mac Pro? I've got a '09 4,1 8 core 2.93 on the way, and I want to flash up to a 5,1 step up the processors to 12 cores and and a newer GPU. It currently has a (hopefully genuine since its a corporate refurb) ATI 5870, and am considering dual 5870 (requires a aux power supple) for crossfire in bootcamp, but was hoping R9 was possible w/o the additional supply. From my understanding the PCI has a supply of 300w-which should be maxed out by the R9, but not exceeding MP logic board specs. This is why the dual 5870 requires a ext p/supply- they are 188w each equaling 76w more than the power available.This is my first post so I may be out in left field-or the parking lot, I'm not sure, any guidance or finds would be appreciated. Hey did you get your mac to recognize the r9? Im assuming that by r9 you mean r9 290. I recently bought an r9 290 thinking it was a 290x because the seller had the listing up with inaccurate info, and i cant get my mac to recognize it.
