1) Does canceling an unlimited plan take effect immediately or at the end of the cycle?

2) Are the free hotspots include only those in the basic plan, like the iPhone, which is basically McDonalds and Starbucks, or also those in the premier plan, which includes hotels and airports?

At the end of the cycle...saw this on AT&T's forums.

I believe it is every AT&T hotspot but I'm not 100% sure.

To be precise, you are cancelling the 'auto-renew'. Treat the 3G service like 'prepaid', and you are just telling them not to 'refill' it, and it might be clearer to a lot of people.. :D

I'd like to know how the AT&T WiFi works, also. I've not seen a good example of that, either. Or how it works. Does it 'just' work, or do you login with an ID? What ID? The iPad AT&T one that doesn't work at att.com/ipad?

I need to trek over to a SBUX and try this out, I think...

It'd work as the other at&t laptopconnect devices or the iphone works. Basically, it uses the sim card to authenticate once you connect to the att wifi hotspot. Its a seamless experience and you can go on with your browsing after connecting, no passwords or anything.

It seems to just work as I was in McDonald's and instead of taking me to the login splash page it just went and logged me in no fuss. What I want to know is how do I tell if I'm on WIFI or cellular?

I haven't activated 3G yet, but I assume it works like the iPhone where the WiFi signal meter will turn into a "3G"

Have you tried the "free" ATT WiFi any place other than a McDonalds or Starbucks?

I have not, but I'm pretty sure it only includes the "basic" like the iphone because an airport, etc. would be considered a roaming partner and normally have an additional cost per month on top of the wifi basic which is included in the dataconnect plans when using an at&t laptopconnect card to connect (which I have experience with). Again, I haven't confirmed myself, but I'm pretty certain its only at&t wifi basic.
