I bought a unlocked iphone to save on the extra $50 a month for my unlimited plan.I did'nt mind paying the $30 data plan but this was unavailible to me on my old plan.I've been using my unlocked iphone for a couple weeks and i checked my account settings and they have on there that i am using the iphone.I had a samsung rugby. They also asked me to change my puk code??for my unlocked sim.Does anyone know what this will do?I dont mind using my iphone without data...but i am hoping my bill does jump up $80 dollars a month to us a iphone.

You don't have to do anything. AT&T will not chnage your rate plan without your approval. Just ignore any messages and continue using your plan.

A friend where I work has been using a 2G iPhone data plan with a 3G iPhone for over a year now. AT&T sends him a text every now and then asking him to change to a 3G data plan and he just ignores it. AT&T won't change your data plan.

AT&T knows what phone you are using, there's no way of disguising it. Why in the world would you want an iPhone without a data plan? Just to look cool? Anyways, to answer your question, your basically SOL because you can't have an iPhone without a data plan.

Yes he can and he is not screwed.

Surviving on a 2G data plan instead of making him switch to a 3G is a lot different then trying to get by without a data plan at all. And yes, AT&T can switch your plan. You're trying to screw over AT&T by going on a cheaper plan so they can make whatever changes necessary to get you onto the right plan. Honestly, if doing all the stuff I see your doing to get around the AT&T stuff and to save $15-20 a month is really that important to you then maybe you should just own a cheaper phone. It's like buying a Mercedes and then complaining that you can't afford your payments and trying to blame the dealership.

Okay, who's right here? Do we go by MR rank?

You know, this is like the 5GB soft data cap that AT&T supposedly had but don't.

People keep insisting that AT&T has changed peoples data plans without warning and they have never been able to post proof. I have asked two different people in the last week to do so and they haven't because they can't provide any.

But they don't. I have never heard of one person on this forum that had their plan changed by AT&T because the user was using a non approved plan.

But just because it doesn't happen here means it doesn't ever happen?

I just talked to my att friend.I am fine. Why would i want a iphone without a data plan. There are alot of things this phone can do that my samsung cannot. If i went to the iphone plan it would raise my bill from 65 a month..unlimited everything to 165 a month.

It may have happened but I have never been able to find anyone who has had this happen. I've searched Howard forums and through Google as well.

Myself, I've been using a 2G data plan with my 3G S iPhone since the week of the 3G S release. I simply bought the 3G S phone and activated it. Bought a 2G iPhone a few days later and activated it using my 3G S phone number. The 2G activated now giving me the 2G 450 minute +200SMS plan with $20 data plan. I've not gotten a warning yet from AT&T. I'm also using the 2G iPhone with a GoPhone sim.

If I remember correctly, some terms of service have clauses that allow for waivers based on your financial capability to pay the monthly plan.

I've only ever seen it used in getting out of your contract early without paying the ETF, but–of course, depending on the wording–I could see it applying to changes in the plan.

OP, let me ask you something else: did you get the phone from AT&T/Apple legitimately and then unlock it or did you buy it from someone who had unlocked it or from a country where they are sold unlocked?

The latter two mean that you can have whatever plan you want and AT&T can't stop you, but if you got it straight from Apple/AT&T, you might have to do some creative convincing.

I have had the same plan for 13 years. All my friends have unlocked phones.I was'nt crazy about the idea.I called att cs and asked if i could have a iphone for my plan...she said yes..just need to add 30 bucks a month.I bought the phone for 499 at the store and was very excited.used it for a month and got a call from att.we r sorry sir but u cant have a iphone on ur plan...not only that but ur plan is now gone...forever...welcome to your new plan...just add 100 bucks a month.after 2 months of hearing we are sorry, they returned my iphone and "found my old plan".I bought a unlocked phone for....500 bucks..put my sim in it...get to use it at home,work....just not out in the streets...i am very happy

First phone from att...second phone from internet...unlocked

If the phone was bought from someone else, that person already covered the subsidy obligation to ATT/Apple, and the OP has every right to use his iphone as he pleases. Now ATT can deny data service to your iphone without a proper iphone plan, but they cannot prevent you from using the basic voice/text plan or raise the fee without your consent. you OWN the phone.
I have been able to use my unlocked iphone on both ATT and T-mobile basic voice plans without a problem. Even if I were to go with ATT's iphone plan, I would never sign up without knowing that I'd be able to unlock the iphone.
