hello! can anyone explain to me how number sync works? I am planning on getting an iPad Pro 12.9 cellular from ATT. Now I have an Apple Watch that is using number sync with my phone. I am just wondering if it’s possible for the iPad to have number sync too? I know my Apple Watch has its own number line but it doesn’t use that and instead it’s sync to my main number. I want it like that for my iPad as well, because I do not want to have two different numbers for People to reach me. The agent I’ve spoken to said that the iPad will have a different number and if I call someone it’s the iPads number that will show up and not my main number. while the second agent I’ve asked said that yes in att website it will show that the iPad has a different number like my watch but it will sync to my main phone number and will only ring and show for that number like my Apple Watch does. I hope I’m making sense!

I'm adding this to my answer here - as maybe you just mean you want to be sitting on your couch, and use you iPad to call from your iPhone which is in another room in which case it will be fine.

But because you specifically mentioned you are buying a Cellular iPad - here's my answer for that:

Because a cellular iPad (or any cellular tablet) is incapable of making cellular telephone calls - How is this working?

I know ATT is the same as Rogers here in Canada - and you can use Number Sync so that calls from your iPad will show as the Ph number from your iPhone - but they must be on the same wifi network and use the FaceTime call sync feature to link them.

There is no Phone app on an iPad and they would need to be started from Contacts.

iPads can only attach to cellular data networks and not voice.

Yes, your iPad will have a different number per se - but it cannot make true cellular voice calls from the iPad. I have a business account with 2 business tablets - they each have a phone number - but are incapable of voice calls from a tablet. I can give people those phone numbers for the tablet - and they can message people directly on them - but no calling.

So - I must be missing something here and maybe this is a new ATT feature - so I'm genuinely curious about how you will be doing this.

Even on the ATT Number Sync page - It specifically says your iPad etc must be on network as your iPhone.

Again, this is not a cellular option.

This is meant for if you're on the couch with your iPad and want to answer your phone call etc.

FROM ATT: Note: To use NumberSync, all Apple devices must share the same Apple ID. Also, your compatible synced device will need a Wi-Fi or wired broadband connection. See the frequently asked questions below for more information.

And finally LOL

It should show the number of your phone if using the number sync. This is because you can use any old regular wifi iPad and use that to answer/make calls from your phone number. The assigned # of the cellular tablet is irrelevant. It should always show your phone's phone number as calling no matter what device you use synced to it.

When I got my new iPad in March, iPadOS found my phone and iOS on my phone detected iPadOS - after I logged in with my Apple ID.

The next step allowed me to use my iPhone to setup my iPad. I followed the prompts on my iPhone to finish setting up the iPad. It was quick and easy. Once that finished my iPad was all setup and started receiving my calls and texts from my phone number. I didn’t have to do anything other than that.

I currently use AT&T.

Wait, I am confused. I thought it was a cellular option? 🤨

@G.McGilli is correct. NumberSync on iPad doesn't use VoLTE or cellular voice, but rather uses Internet data like Wi-Fi Calling.

Charges: When tablet not connected to Wi-Fi, data usage rates apply to voice & video calls on tablet.

thank you for answering my questions! I just wanna make sure that when I use my iPad for texting/ FaceTime let’s say using the cellular because I am not connected to a WiFi, it’s my main cellphone number that’s gonna show and not another number Because I really don’t need another number. and according to your explanation, that is what’s gonna happen, right? If I text someone using my iPad via the cellular mode, it’s still gonna be my real cellphone number showing, correct?
