I find the way to solve all disputes is to load wikipedia on the nearest internet-capable phone. If you were discussing the iPhone, I'd imagine you'd have one laying around nearby :)

This x1000. Seriously, it is not hard to disprove a rep.

I just think it is funny. Heres how it went.

I was looking to add another line, and wanted to make sure that by adding that line, in no way affected my 2 year contract and renewal date so I can get the new iPhone this summer.

He says "What makes you think they are coming out with a new one this summer"

I reply "They have every year since it has been released, and they have shown signs pointing to a new one this year when they announced a new OS for it"

He says "No they havent"

I reply "Yes they really have"

He says "No they havent"

I say "Seriously, yes they have, do you get any training?"

He says "OK whatever the customer is always right, hows that? "

Wouldn't expect that from a 60+ year old. Figured they would have more manners

Haha, coming from someone who works in a Post office with 60+ year olds, thats exactly how I would expect someone that age to act towards a customer. I always felt like the AT&T store was like a DMV anyway.

His job is to sell cell phones

an AT&T salesman said the same thing

the iPhone isnt coming out this summer

Im pretty sure he only said that so he would lead me to believe that the iPhone wont come, and I shouldnt wait so I can upgrade now, which gives him commission

they are shadyyy

Agreed. Its kind of sad when they don't know much about a product they are trying to sell.

Stories like this always remind me of when my wife and I went to a VW dealer in November 2005 to look at the newly redesigned Passat for 2006:

Me: Hi, we're here to check out the new Passat

Saleslady: (staring blankly, then frowning, then writing the word 'Passot' on a notepad) I don't think we sell those....

Me: Umm, there are like 10 of them parked over there. Is there someone else that can help us?

Saleslady: Sorry, today is my first day, I don't really know what we sell. I'll be right back.

We left.

I think once you are an educated consumer like most people here on Macrumors its best to avoid retail salespeople. When I go in to these places I pretty much already know what I want, but I can't help and overhear all the false information being handed out to other customers around me. Bestbuy has the best ones... wow do I hear some classic ones there.

I bought an original iPhone and just attached the data plan to my original non-contract line... the next summer I bought a 3GS and was on the phone for hours explaining to an AT&T rep that was not locked into an existing contract just because I was already an AT&T customer. She was hard up that it would have been impossible for me to have an original iPhone without a contract.

I guess you can't really blame them... it's more than likely 'just a job' to most of these people and not everybody follows this stuff as closely as we. But yeah, it's frustrating if I know a thing and somebody not knowing it is slowing down my day.

it pisses me off do much when someone said the wrong thing.

when i didnt know anything about tech i had to always take there word and always got screwed. damn bitches.

Ask him what the initials AT&T originally stood for..

Chances are he has no idea.

Then stomp on his foot, hard, and run out the door.

AT&T stands for American Telephone and Telegraph. I'm not sure of the order for the T's though. I must agree that once you have existed on Macrumors or a site of it's kind sales people seem like snobs and they really have no idea about the products they sell.

He probably thinks that the iPhone 3G and 3GS is the same phone because they look exactly alike.

it's not that they don't have manners, it's that they lie out of their teeth. they have a financial incentive to sell you the phone and their manager pressures them into saying whatever it takes. i honestly don't even think that they even realize what they're doing.

There's a saying, "arguing on the internet is like..." and substitute "on the internet" with "with a salesman" for this case, and I won't finish the sentence... :)
