ATT upgrade question

Sorry if this has been asked 1000 times, I looked through the search but could not find the answer.

We recently got 3G in our area and my wife is wanting to upgrade her 2G iphone. When I look to change to a newer phone it tells me that she will lose her +200 texts that came with the original plan. If I "upgrade" my 3G and just let her put her sim in and activate the new phone with her itunes, will she be able to keep the original plan or am I just better off paying an additonal $5 per month for the 200 texts? Don't want to sound cheap but $135 per month is enough already.

Assuming you are in the US and on AT&T, the original iPhone data plan costs $20 and included 200 texts. The 3G data plan costs $30 and includes 0 texts. For $5 you can add 200 texts. For $15 you can add unlimited texting for your family plan (so everyone gets unlimited texts).

I am not sure what you are asking in your alternate scenario.

It will only work for a little while. AT&T does regular account sweeps and will "upgrade" her plan once it sees a 3G capable phone on the old 2G plan.

It will not definitely work, nice try though. Here's how it works:

If you have a 2g phone, at&t offered 200+unlimited data for $20
If you have a 3g phone, there are no texts and unlimited data for $30

I'm gathering you know that, just wanted to rehash. Anyway, since the 3G phone is using the 3G connection, you need the more expensive plan... actually, they will automatically convert the plan when you buy the new phone. And If YOU buy the 3g, they will deactivate your old 3g (trust me). I just upgraded my 2G to 3GS and this is what happened.

But if you need the logic behind it, here it goes:

When you and I bought our 2G phones, we paid $400.. because the phone wasn't subsidized. That means you and I were technically eligible for another phone upgrade since day one. Since you can now by a new iPhone for $100, the only way this is possible is because at&t subsidizes it, and in the long run, you pay more. They take away the freebie 200 texts and charge you 10$ more for the plan for 2 years. So, 24 months x 10 = 240. 240 + 100 is 340, what your actually paying for the new 3g. Now factoring in additional texts for 24 months, and your actually paying a lot more then we did for our 2G's...
