ATT voicemail: New iPhone 3G voicemail issue

I got my 16gb iphone blk this morning (6th place in line at Apple-PDX -

However, besides other issues - I was unable to use voicemail menu after system activation

Symptom: When u press 'voicemail' menu then nothing happens.

Solution: ATT store rep suggested calling 611 - I was forwarded on to a 2nd level iphone specialist and he knew about this issue already. He mentioned that several people have called already -

For some system glitch the voicemail is not getting setup automatically.

Steps to resolve:

1) Turn OFF your phone.
2) Dial 1-253-709-4025...this is the ATT voicemail setup backdoor line
3) Complete setup and press * at end to exit.
4)You can now ask a friend or call your cell and leave a voice mail.
5) Turn ON your phone and Goto iPhone voicemail.....should be ready for use.

I had the same problem. I just kept pushing the freaking voicemail button over nd over.

Finally it told me I had the wrong password and prompted me for one and then everything was fine.

I think it is having trouble connecting at first. So just keep trying over and over.

You don't have to call that number. Just call your own number and you go right to voicemail.
