ATT without contract

So , finally decided that I am gonna get me a iphone to complement my MacBook , so called ATT to see what would be the retail price for the iphone without a contract . I am a att customer , but not under a contract cause I refuse to change my plan , so waiting to hear the crazy price they are gonna tell me to buy it up front

At this point I believe it's if you buy an iPhone you MUST get a new 2-year contract too, period. No new contract, no iPhone.
