I've got a 17" (beleive it's low-end) IMac, am I able to attach a Dell LCD computer monitor to my IMac or do I need a ADC monitor?

yeah, you can attach a dell to it. you need a mini-dvi to dvi adapter, then connect the dvi cable from the monitor to that.

No, you don't need an ADC (and an ADC will not even work with a PPC iMac). What type of iMac is it (PPC or Intel)? The PPC iMacs could only attach via VGA using a mini-VGA to VGA cable; the newer Intel iMacs can attach to either VGA or DVI using the appropriate adapter min-DVI to VGA or DVI. The PPC iMacs can also only mirror the image on the screen unless you use a hack (I forgot the name). Intel iMacs can mirror or extend the desktop.

a 2Ghz intel, it's a work computer and the monitor is entirely to small vertically for doing design jobs. they have some spare monitors here but they are all dells. i'm also working on getting more memory for it my IMac cause it's slow as anything.

what type of an adapter would i need?

thanks for all the help so far!

What type of a dell monitor is it? You could attach either vga (most common for work monitors) or dvi. The adapters are the same price and you can get them at Apple or Best Buy. Get the miniDVI to DVI or miniDVI to VGA depending on the monitor's capabilities. Of course you will also need the appropriate cable; the adapter goes into the back of the iMac and provides either a DVI or a VGA connector that you can plug the monitor's cable into. The iMac should detect the other monitor automatically as soon as it is connected.

When running Windows Vista Home Premium on my Intel based iMac I cannot get it to project the desktop onto my TV using the mini DVI to VGA adaptor with the VGA port on my TV. It projects perfectly when running OS X and It worked perfectly with my old virus ridden PC the source of the frustration that caused me to make the switch to the Mac side of the force. One of the main reasons I bought windows for my Mac was to game. I was looking forward to playing battlefield 2, the world best online game on my 52 inch Mitsubishi 1080p TV. Could someone please tell me what’s going on. Before this I was a believer that the world’s best PC is a Mac.
