Ok, I'll try not to be wordy but LISTEN UP!!!!

I pre-ordered and got my iPad 3g on April 30, signed up for unlimited plan instantly, I haven't had a problem until now. I got an email saying that my payment didn't go through for my auto-renewal unlimited plan, which hit me with a  cause there was not prob with my card. I called AT&T to clear it up and find out what the prob is, as I still had 22 hours left on the plan to correct it.

The AT&T rep did not know what happened with my account but that I only have the options now of either 2GB or 250MB. That obviously didn't go over too well and we squared things up for now, but the following is very, VERY IMPORTANT.

Current 3G Unlimited Plan customers that are setup for auto-renewal on their credit card, AT&T will charge the card 24 hours before the TIME/DAY that your plan expires (Example: If you signed up for plan at 6:30pm on May 31st, then at 6:30pm on June 30 your card will be charged). Remember that it's a 30 DAY plan and not a monthly, so every month it'll be a different day (due to days in month, right). ANYWAY, if that charge does not go through for any reason, AT&T sees that as a breach in contract and you have officially forfeited your right to the unlimited data plan and can not get it back. So I asked the obvious question, can you change the card information or is the card assigned to the auto-renewal and the 30 day auto-renewal your only ticket to glory.....and he said confidently, YES.

I am not referencing a site, official statement or anything other that the customer service guy at AT&T who gave me all of this information. But he did say that they were running into a few of these lately.

YOU BETTER MAKE SURE THERE'S MONEY ON THAT CARD, MONEY IN THAT BANK AND DON'T CHANGE A THING WITH YOUR CELLULAR DATA ACCOUNT ON YOUR IPAD!!!!!! AT&T will give you a shaft that even Richard Roundtree would be envious of.

Pardon my EXCESSIVE USE OF CAPS AND BOLD, but after spending an hour on the phone with them and finding this out........my peeps should know and be very concerned.

Peace out and stay unlimited

Oh yeah and to top it off, AT&T is training their reps to blame Apple :apple: for not anticipated the data usage due to the number of devices. HAHAHAHA, oh my that's funny. But that's neither here nor there right now, I am very upset.

So did you not have enough funds? Honestly I plan on AT&T to eventually get rid of the unlimited plan for those of us who are grandfathered in anyway so it won't surprise me when it does go away. So are they not making sure you still have unlimited?

So I asked the obvious question,

(1) can you change the card information

(2) or is the card assigned to the auto-renewal and the 30 day auto-renewal your only ticket to glory

.....and he said confidently, YES.

Yes to which part?

I had the funds in the account, it simply didn't go through as AT&T said in the email, but not sure how as when I called back the card was able to be charged. The rep did actually help me and said that in this unique circumstance that he would let me sign up for a 2GB plan and then he would cancel that one and change it to an unlimited plan with auto-renewal. He said this is what they're doing for ppl who had iPads on backorder that were ordered before June 7.
I didn't want to do the sign up for a different plan thing, but I had no option, even tho I still had 22 hrs, I could not make a manual payment on an auto-renew plan. So the plan would expired anyway and he said that he could only do that because he can see that I've had the plan since April 30 and I was still technically within the plan for another 22 hrs. But that's not even talking about the "sweep" he said that Apple performs on iPad data plans to make sure people aren't using unlimited plans on devices purchased after June 7th. But that's a whole other story, cause I told him that I pay AT&T for my data and that Apple doesn't own a cellular network and to my knowledge does not own any towers. Things just aren't sounding right with all of this!

Yes to which part?

Sorry, with the or, the Yes was to the latter. No you cannot change card information and retain same data plan, it will prompt you for a new plan. Yes to the card you have on file is your only ticket to unlimited and changing anything will kick you out of your current plan.

Sorry for the confusion.

The rep basically made it sound like AT&T is going to use any loophole they can to weed us all out. Of course he said it much more pc

And I'm going to throw it in their face that their email says TWO HOURS before. Two hours. Not 24 hours.

From the email confirmation you get:
DOMESTIC IPAD PLANS WILL AUTOMATICALLY RENEW EVERY 30 DAYS, AND YOU AUTHORIZE US TO CHARGE YOUR CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD FOR YOUR INITIAL AND ANY SUBSEQUENT IPAD PLAN, UNLESS YOU CANCEL THE AUTOMATIC RENEWAL OF YOUR SERVICE. TO CANCEL AUTOMATIC RENEWAL, VISIT WWW.ATT.COM/IPAD FROM YOUR IPAD PRIOR TO YOUR NEXT SCHEDULED PAYMENT TO AVOID BEING CHARGED. IN ORDER TO PROCESS YOUR AUTOMATIC RENEWAL IN A TIMELY FASHION AND ENSURE YOUR CONTINUED USE OF THE SERVICE, AT&T WILL CHARGE YOUR CREDIT CARD OR DEBIT CARD FOR THE AUTOMATIC RENEWAL APPROXIMATELY TWO HOURS BEFORE YOUR NEW IPAD PLAN 30 DAY PERIOD AUTOMATIC RENEWAL IS SET TO BEGIN. SHOULD YOU CANCEL AUTOMATIC RENEWAL AFTER WE HAVE CHARGED YOUR CARD BUT BEFORE THE AUTOMATIC RENEWAL PERIOD IS SET TO BEGIN (E.G. WE CHARGED YOUR CREDIT CARD FOR THE RENEWAL AT 7 AM ET FOR A 9 AM ET AUTO RENEWAL AND YOU NOTIFIED US TO CANCEL THE AUTOMATIC RENEWAL AT 8 AM ET), PLEASE CONTACT AT&T CUSTOMER SERVICE TO PROCESS A CREDIT FOR THE AUTOMATIC RENEWAL.

Thank You,
AT&T

I'm sure this will change, but it is what i got last month at renewal. They also haven't notified me of any changes to what I signed up for either. A press release isn't a notification in my book, and they state in their TOS they will tell me... So I haven't heard **** from AT&T about the unlimited going away..... Or not being able to activate at will. Have you?

This is a good question. I work for the govt and travel to the US from time to time. I was lucky and signed up for the unlimited plan, then cancelled. I guess even though I once was a current using customer all of this changed. I wonder how AT&T will handle this in the future. I do hope they get screwed in this class action suit though.

AT&T is always finding news ways to screw us over. I wonder when is there next... Let's screw our customers over meeting. Jeez-- no concern for ethics whatsoever! Why am I not surprised?

And as long as people continue to pay, not much is going to change.
