ATTO ExpressSAS RAID

I'm thinking about purchasing an ATTO ExpressSAS R608 or R644 for my 5,1 Mac Pro. It appears that these are one of the few non-Apple RAID cards that can boot OS X.

I know this isn't the ATTO support forum, but I was hoping one of you already has this configuration and could help me out with this.

Does anyone know if these cards support a RAID 0+1 configuration? My intentions are to have two striped 2TB drives and a single 4TB drive to mirror them.

Finally, would this configuration be significantly slower than RAID 10?

I'm not entirely sure this will work very well IMO.

What would be wrong with having one RAID 0 set and then an automatic backup to the 4TB drive?

RAID gets banded about a lot and in most cases it isn't suited to the task in hand...

Also I don't think you can RAID 0+1 2x2 and 1x4. Unless your going to RAID 0 the 2GBs and then RAID 1 then RAID 0 with the 4TB, but even then I don't think you can do that and that is ALOT to go wrong.

Those cards support 10 (technically, a bit safer than 01).

But you can make your stripe sets, and an independent set (backup), and use backup software to schedule them automatically.

I mention this, as a mirror (RAID 1), is NOT A BACKUP. Make a mistake (human error), and it's automatically duplicated. Data becomes corrupted (hardware error), and it's automatically duplicated.

Another brand of card that boots OSX, is Areca.

That said however, what you're trying to do is possible without the need of a hardware RAID card, as OSX is capable of 0,1,10, and JBOD (concatenation or single disk).

Just build the two sets (whatever configuration you want that's possible with OS X), install the backup software, and set the scheduling. Done.

Yes, you can create RAID 0+1 with the ATTO cards you mentioned via the ATTO Configuration Utility.
