ATTO Thunderbolt to SAS adaptor

Can someone explain to me what exactly this does for me and what SAS enclosures I can use with it? There is no mention of RAID at all, so I am a little bit confused about that aspect. Does that mean it's SAS JBOD only?

The Thunderlink -SH-1068 is not a RAID (hardware RAID) adapter- but you can use Apple's software RAID function. On the hardware level it's only a JBOD/SAS/SATA controller. Here is a link to the real hardware RAID product

Why do these boxes have two SAS ports?

Why does a DAS like the one in the link below have two SAS ports? Am I supposed to connect the two ports on the ATTO to the two on the DAS for max throughput?

Will these ATTO devices work to bridge older Proavio EM8 enclosures to nMP?

I have 2 PROAVIO EM8's daisy chained attached with Highpoint RAID card in my oMP. Can these ATTO devices bridge the edit box's to nMP using TB2? (I assume the RAID's will need be redefined and rebuilt) but will the "Thunderstream" ATTO device interface work on older EM8's enclosures to bring them along to the new nMP TB2 party?

Does ATTO have these with TB2 interface? These appear to be 2 x TB1 interfaces in their literature specifications.

Why do these boxes have two SAS ports?

Depending on the enclosure you connect to, each SAS port may only be set to manage 4x HDDs at a time. So if a particular device has 8 x drives you may need to use both ports. It's most common on simple enclosures where the RAID controller is external to the enclosure.

An SFF-8088 connector carries 4 lanes of SAS. This means you can talk to four end-point devices (hard drives, most commonly; could be tape drives) from each port. To go beyond four devices, you need an SAS expander. Typically this will be built into an external enclosure. An enclosure with a built-in SAS expander (like, say, this) will also usually let you daisy chain additional enclosures, up to the total number of end-point devices that the controller can support (typically 128 drives per port).
