I have a 160gb AppleTV for playing my music and I have Boxee installed on it so I can play AVI films and movies.

I am thinking of selling that and getting a ATV 2 so I can use Airplay to play music and use the AirVideo app to live transcode the AVIs and use Airplay to put them to my HDTV.

Obviously there is an added device here but just thought I would gather peoples opinions on whether to stick with what I have or get an ATV2. Are there any advantages of getting a ATV2?

You can install XBMC on ATV2 via jailbreak to play your AVIs w/o using AirVideo.

Have you thought about Plex at all? I had a Boxee Box once and the software on it was just inconvenient and hard to change the incorrectly-scraped media. If you get an ATV2 and jailbreak it, you can install a Plex client that connects to the server program on your computer. It also will allow you to stream to your iOS and Android devices using a mobile app.

I didn't realise you could jailbreak the ATV2. Didn't think there was enough internal memory on it.

If I did jailbreak it and use Plex or XBMC what is the advantage of ATV2 over ATV1?

It can play much higher quality media without stuttering and then ATV1 can. Plus you can install other apps too. The built in Netflix app and MLB access are nice too. Plus you can use iTunes Match to play your iTunes music without a computer.

My music would still have to be streamed though

Anyone know if there is an iPlayer app for ATV2, I guess if not I could use Airplay but the content wont be HD

This was my response to a previous thread:

I use a combination of the Boxee iPad app and the Boxee Media Manager on my Mac Mini, pointing this at my Movies folder on the Mac. It will then stream to the iPad, transcoding on the fly, which will in turn stream via AirPlay to the TV. I then use Get iPlayer Automator. I had jailbroken my ATV initially and installed XBMC, but found this is a much better way of doing things, as it means I can run official software updates immediately, without losing functionality.
