Just ordered a ATV2 and read that it supports up to 720p in plex app. Some of my movies are 1080p.

Then, will the ATV (Plex) just downgrade the resolution or just deny to play them?

It will read them and play at 720p
 
IMO - Plex if you videos and music are local on your network. xbmc if you want to access files on the internet.

Plex requires a Plex server on a computer in-network right? I have a Synology NAS with both SMB and DLNA capability..could the Plex client use either of these? File formats aside (I'm willing to run a batch-convert for a better UI), is Plex the better option?
