ATV 2 and photos question

I plan on using an ATV 2 (when I get one) to view photos that I have on my iMac. Does the ATV 2 require that the photos be in the "Photos" folder on the iMac or be in iTunes for it to work? I prefer Picasa over iPhoto so I keep all of my photos on an external hard drive that is connected to my iMac. Thanks!
