I've had a ATV 4K (128GB) a year or so. I like it in general, but I really dislike the remote which seem to disconnect randomly and goes into superscrolling every once in a while. I tried the Function101 remote which I also didn't like.

Enter the Google TV Streamer 4K. So far it kind of ticks all the boxes, and since there a Apple TV app, I can access all my purchased movies etc.

So... what to do? Are there ways to improve the Apple remote? Otherwise I may have to stick with the GTV instead

The Google Streamer is a nice upgrade from the previous Chromecast with GGTV.

One thing I missing from the Streamer is the auto framerate function. I think Netflix is the only app that supports this feature so far.

For the AppleTV app on AndroidTV, it cannot access movie extras which means I cannot access a different version a movie that's sometimes included in the iTunes extras.

Better value, depending on an enduser's needs, may be the Onn Pro 4k from Walmart for $49.88.

Thanks. Then I may have to hold on to the ATV after all. Hadn't thought about the extras.

Guess I have to look up a better remote forthe ATV.

As funny as it sounds, try a better quality HMDI cable on the ATV box. Maybe an 8K version. I had a laggy or sometime doomscroll remote, and found on another forum to replace the HMDI cable. It worked for me

AppleTV can basically "learn" any remote. I presume this Google device comes with a remote you like. If you like AppleTV better, you could probably have AppleTV learn the Google remote and use them together.

Or if your TV has a good remote, have AppleTV learn it and use it instead.

Other video devices? Universal remote? Apple's Remote app on your phone or iPad can be an AppleTV remote. Pick a remote, any remote.

The Google TV Streamer remote is like the Apple TV remote in that it uses bluetooth so Apple TV can't learn from it.

Google TV streamer- like AppleTV remote- does have an IR blaster too... so it should be able to be used... as could any other remote you have or like.

Pure Bluetooth remotes are not that common because many other devices don't support only Bluetooth and/or only CEC. So the default fallback is IR (too) which should be able to control the oldest A/V tech someone could dig out of their attic/basement for a retro night circa 1985. Just about all of A/V have the IR "eye" too and thus that old standby is not going away anytime soon.

It has an IR transmitter to control TVs/AVs but not the device itself. Unlike the Apple TV, the Google TV Streamer doesn't have an IR receiver on the device itself.

Yes, but when AppleTV "learns" a remote, it only need the remote to "send" IR. No "receiving" necessary.

And I'm talking about the Google TV Streamer REMOTE, not the box or whatever it is. Basically, if you like that remote, you can very likely get AppleTV to learn it and use it instead of the AppleTV remote: Google (or any other) remote controlling AppleTV box.

Learn what from it? The Google TV Streamer will never send IR commands that control the box (home, arrow keys, etc).

AppleTV learn remote

Anything it will send via IR is likely to be learned by AppleTV.

Again, I'm perceiving you have some kind of box you call Google TV Streamer and it has a remote. Edit: I just looked up Google TV streamer and it has a pill shaped "box" and an AppleTV-like remote.

I also perceive you are down on the AppleTV remote but like the Google streamer remote... but down on the Stream box but like the AppleTV box.

I've already looked up to see if the Google TV Streamer remote can broadcast IR and it can... so the AppleTV should be able to "learn" it per the link at the top of this post.

If all of that is right, I'm trying to offer a possible way to pair the Google TV stream REMOTE to control the AppleTV box... retiring the GoogleTV Stream box and the AppleTV remote.

Else, any other remote you have can be "learned' by the AppleTV too: the one that came with your TV... or your audio system if you have one, or a universal remote from the store, or the popular Function101 remote, etc.

Ahhhh, OK. Then, a potential is go get one of them $10-$30 universals at any store and it will fully control AppleTV. Just be sure it has the buttons on it that can cover everything AppleTV can support (which will be most Universals). Either punch in the code in the remote to self-program it for AppleTV or punch in any code for the AUX button and let AppleTV learn those commands (result of either scenario is the same).

Or again, that Function 101 remove linked in #11 is actually someone's attempt at making a better replacement remote for AppleTV.
