First of all, my computer is an old Macbook (2006). Its got a blown out fan (one operating) and a battery that can't stay off charge for over 5 minutes and a motherboard that tends to overheat and choke up when taxed/temperature increases...
Having said that, i use it mainly as a media server/ torrent tool. I do watch 720p MKV movies using VLC as well (directly into TV). My problem comes when watching a movie, the computer will heat up and everntually will make the movie skip/freeze/un sync audio or cut off. Now i know my issue is the computer, but I noticed that my processor wasn't taxed when using the AppleTV i have upstairs. Now, instead of me going out now and buying a new Mac or Mac Mini.... would an AppleTV meet my video needs.
Basically I want to know how taxing streaming videos are to the Macbook. Seems like it didn't do much processing with the AppleTV. So does the AppleTV handle the decoding/encoding or am I barking up the worng tree?
