aTV and streaming from timecapsule...Problems.

So,have a setup Timecapsule in upstairs and Airport Express (B/G) downstairs extending the range.

I have made my library for music and movies in the timecapsule as I dont have space in the laptop.

So,when trying to stream the stuff to aTV,the download times are abysmal...Like 3 hours before a films starts to play,and then it stops continously.


Obviously as the connection is aTV-iBook-Airport Express-Timecapsule,I didnt think it would be blazing fast. But now it is unusable.

With menumeter I get this kind of transfer speeds.

From the timecapsule to iBook = 85K/Bs
Timecapsule to aTV = 40-70K/Bs
Internet to iBook = 85K/Bs


So,somehow the maximum speed I get with that setup is 85K/Bs.


Is there any way to increase the speed?
Setups should be ok and no interference.

What kind of speed should I expect with that kind of setup?
What is the minimum speed for streaming 780x480 material?
Would a N series Express help the situation at all?

From my understanding a bridge will 1/2 your speed which seems to be what you are seeing. It can also cause other issues that I have read about when trying to keep a constant connection for streaming video.
I have read that G does work fine, but you are really not even G when you use the bridge. I use N without issue and everything works great. 10-30 sec lag from when you select a movie until it starts to play, but once it starts it's fine.

I don't have speeds off hand, but when I get home tonight will check for you.

Sorry for the delay.

I pinged from my Macbook Pro to the aTVs and pasted the results below.

My MBP uses N to connect to the network, the Mac Mini is connected with ethernet and then to the aTVs using N. Both aTVs pinged similar.

I also pinged from the Mac Mini to the aTVs and it was also similar.

Hope it helps. Don't give up on it. The aTV is great once you get everything set up. Your wife may not admit it, mine didn't, but do they ever? : )

I think it's even slightly worse than you're describing, if your iBook is downstairs/connected to the AE. The data is going time capsule to the airport express, then to your ibook (to get to the itunes instance), then back out to the airport express, then to the apple tv. So basically you're airport express is trying to handle four data flows at once (one coming from the time capsule, one going to your ibook, one coming back from the ibook, and one to the apple tv, plus a little bit of confirmation traffic in the other direction). So you're already cut down from your maximum by about 4. On top of that, if any one of those connections is a little bit weak and getting less than the full 54 Mbps physical bit rate, ALL of the connections will have to use the lower rate.

One thing that might help is leaving the iBook upstairs connected to the Time Capsule (wired even better). Then the TC is handling either one (wired iBook) or three (wireless) connections, and the AE only two. If you go the wired route at worst you should be splitting your speed in two, which is about as good as it gets, ATV-wise.

Yep,i knew i was digging blood from my nose when getting atv.
But still,why the frigging fkuk cant aTV get directly material from the NAS/wifi disks.. Bets me. Multimedia home my arse.

The solution seems to be to get the Timecapsule dowstairs via cable and make a N network downstairs AND buy a new machine that is N capable streaming stuff.

Thatwise the atv would stand some kind of chance of streaming stuff..

Or make a aTV mod and get all the material to a external hdd.


Nice ecological modus operandi apple has there.
