Would this mean the Apple TV could just stream avi/divx files stored on a computer? If so it would make it a lot more appealing to me (with lots of avi files and no patience or ability to hack anything myself).

Well it is a lot of trouble and not everybody can actually do it. Also this "hack" doesn't change anything.

There are pre-built patchstick images available for FREE if you Google a little bit. It wouldn't surprise me if this product was one of the same.

The hack changes your aTV install by installing a bunch of additional software and enabling SSH. It does actually change something.

Again, ripping off OSS and profiting from the work of the devs who make this software available for free is just wrong. Someone DoS them already!

Ok. But here they give a money back gurantee and it says on the website it doesn't change anything or void your waranty. And how do you know that the devolpers arn't getting money from this?

Thats what I wanted to do but I found out that if you plan on streaming your files to your Apple TV then you will have to go and buy EyeConnect from Elgato since this software won't allow you to stream non-itunes supported files.

This is not true. You can mount network drives using nitoTV.

You don't lose any of the regular ATV functionality. What you end up with is additional menu items that add things like browsing a network drive. From there you can select and play a wide variety of file types, including DivX.
It works pretty well, but you wont be able to play very large HD file smoothly.

BTW - getting this all to work on your own can be a real PITA! the wiki for it is not for beginners.

but are they for real

I just paid the 60 bucks and that was the last i heard from them.... did anyone actually get something... I emailed them no reply... I am afraid it might be a hoax, an internet scam

I paid on 5/27, the order still says "Pending."

They have about a week to deliver the product to me or at least get me a tracking number. After that I will initiate a chargeback with Amex.

I know I could do this update myself, but I figured that I'll just go the lazy route and pay someone to make it all simple-stupid for me.

I already have a hacked tv but ordered this anyway to see what they are really selling. Ordered it on may 24th and status changed to shipped as of yesterday. Hopefully it will show up tomorrow or Monday.

For the life of me I can't find a tracking # or even how they shipped it. I never received an email saying that they shipped it either.

Too Good To Last

Here's what they say on their web site today:

Due to questions arising regarding the fair use of a particular file present on the aTV Flash, and conflicting opinions as to whether or not it falls under the fair use category, we have VOLUNTARILY discontinued offering the aTV Flash at this time.

In our interpretation of the fair use doctrine, our software does not cross any lines, but since this is a grey area issue, we have taken a proactive approach and decided to seek clarifcation directly from the rights holder before we offer the product again.

We are working with them to resolve this, and will have updates posted here as they become available.

Thank you.

Yeah, my order got cancelled. Oh well. I should keep an eye on my credit card to make sure that it was not charged or that I was refunded.

I play 4Gb+ HiDef MOVs and MP4s including AC3 5.1 sound using ATVfiles. Works great :)
Using aTVFiles, I find the occasional studder during busy scene changes in higher bandwidth DivX files with a wired network. I have also had some problems with audio falling out of sync. These files play fine on all of my other players (360, XBMC, VLC, Perian on a Mac..)
These issues don't occur on all files, but it's frequent enough, that I just use my 360 for DivX playback on my TV.
I'm thinking about pulling out my aTV and replacing it with my Mini and XBMC, but I really love the on-demand and iTunes integration with the aTV. If/when XBMC provides the same level integration with iTunes (including QT DRM playback), it will replace my aTV.

Well it's back. Looks like there was a dispute about what was considered "fair use" and they voluntarily took the software down while they worked it out with the rights holder. I assume it's now been clarified and resolved. Here is the link for ATV Flash.

now I am super curious for peoples experience with this... It would be so easy....

at ATV4Windows, they give you a file which you use to create a patchstick under windows.
Applecore only works under Mac.
ATV4Win's "updates" are minor changes on the img file and do not necessarily relate to different ATV firmware versions
