Atv jaibroken question

I want to get my parents an Atv and jailbreak it so that I can use my desktop media server to stream content to the Atv. The content is mainly avi format. Will jail breaking it provide such functionality?

Yes your best bet is atv flash's media player but plex or xbmc may also work as well.
