Hi Everyone,

This is my virgin post here. Hope someone can help. Here's the problem: My :apple:TV showed the flashing question mark on the screen, there is a flashing orange light on the front of the machine, and a repetitive clicking sound.

I have attempted all the obvious (restore, unplug, etc...) to no avail.

I purchased the machine in the US, then moved to Switzerland (CH), bringing my 140GB of watchable material with me. It is still under the one year warranty.

So, can I take it in to the Apple store here and get it repaired? (The whole limited warranty, changing countries thing gets confusing). Is the warranty valid in CH?

Hope someone can offer some advice. Thanks in advance.

No, you have to look at the terms of the specific product to see if the warranty is worldwide.

Sorry but wouldn't it just be easier to phone Apple and ask them rather than asking on a forum where your gonna get half a dozen conflicting answers and still be non the wiser.

I am 100% sure that the AppleCare is Worldwide but the free warranty I am not so sure. Your best idea is to go into the Apple Store and say that your AppleTV broke and that it is still covered under warranty. They will not be able to distinguish between an US Apple TV and a Swiss Apple TV. So as long as they do not ask where you got it from (as in country) then they should repair it. And before so person come in crying "FRAUD! FRAUD!" this is not fraud as it is not the customers' responsibility to tell Apple of the origin of the Apple TV, it is for them to ask so while you may not be telling them everything you are not withholding information asked for.

Apple Agreement

Okay, I just checked Apple's Limited Warranty Agreement and it states as such:

If the product is portable, meaning that it can operate independently without a power cord, you may obtain warranty service worldwide. However, service will be limited to the options available in the country where service is requested. If the product is not portable, warranty service may be restricted to the country where the product is purchased.

So, basically we have some very typical ambiguous language regarding the warranty. Notice the 'may be' I bolded which implies that although the repair is not guarantied it may (probably) be offered. Even though you do not have the warranty on your side you can still say that the language in the contract is very ambiguous, and it implies that the product will be fixed. However I do doubt they will ask where it was purchased, so just follow my previous advice and everything should go fine!

Hope this also helps,

Maybe they wont ask but they are going to want to see a proof of purchase or check the serial number to make sure it's still in warranty and that check is more than likely going to tell them which country it was purchased in.
