I have a large collection of music on an external drive. I have an imac connected via airport extreme, I believe it's wireless G. I purchased an ATV today to be delivered next week. Both ATV and Imac will be using my home network. My AE is located in my finished basement with my modem, one floor below my Imac.
Should flash (hack) the ATV to take my external drive or should I do the music through wifi system? Will there be a lag when I select various songs? That's my concern. Not really that concerned about video, I would like to show my aperture library though. Again is this ok wirelessly?

For photos and music, I think G speeds will suffice. Because those Aperture files transferred over are going to be the previews anyway.

I don't think you will have any noticeable lag streaming music over a wireless G network. I was doing that until I got frustrated by iTunes frequently dropping the conection to my Apple TV. I then did a little filtering to sync the bulk of my music library (25GB) on my 40 GB ATV. The Apple TV, controlled by the Remote app on an iPhone/iTouch, is an awesome way to listen to music.

Recently, with Mac OS 10.6.2, iTunes 9.03 and Apple TV 3.02, I haven't had any dropped connections, so I could probably go back to streaming with no worries.

I have a G network and have no problems streaming music (or videos for that matter.) Of course, if I use the microwave oven then the network speed goes down immediately. Fortunately, the oven is fairly loud, so listening quality audio is not feasible anyways. :)

Streming non itunes files does not relly work .I would suggest you use an external HD for your files, and connect it via USB.

btw atvflash is more expensive than patchstick.ca and provides less functions.
