ATV2 and Wake on Lan

Hi.
I've had a problem for ages with my ATV2 connected via wifi to my iMac (2011).
If the ATV is on but the iMac goes to sleep, i can't connect to the shared libraries under the 'computers' option on the ATV2.

I have Wake on Lan ticked in my iMac preferences, but it doesn't appear to do anything. My question is in two parts:
1: is this correct that although WOL is ticked on the iMac, the ATV2 can't wake it?
2: is there a webpage somewhere that shows me how to test my WOL connection?

I'm running Mountain lion and both devices are fully up to date.

if you have another mac, try this program.

you may need an airport express/extreme on the network for it to work from the aTV.

Unfortunately I don't have another mac.
'may' or 'do' need an airport express/extreme?
