ATV2 & iPod Touch

I'm getting my dad an Apple TV for Christmas. He currently has the 3rd gen iPod Touch and know he can utilize the Remote app to control the apple tv in lieu of the actual remote.

What I'm wondering however is if, say he is Watching a video on YouTube or Netflix on his iTouch, can he airplay it so it stops playing on his iToch and resumes playing on the ATV2?

What about if he has photos on his iPod he'd like to share on the big screen?

I'm just asking cause I know this new apple tv can do quite a bit with iTunes nearby, but am wondering about the iPod touch side of things, seeing as my dad rarely has his laptop turned on. (it's an old windows xp machine, can't blame him)

NetFlix: No, you can't airplay it, at least not yet. However, I believe that if you pause it on the iPod then open NetFlix on the ATV, it will allow you to resume playing from the current location.

Photos: Never tried it
Music: Definitely works over AirPlay - even from non-Apple Apps like Pandora, Sirius/XM and Last.fm

YouTube: Never Tried this either, but generally the built-in Apps that came from Apple seem to work with AirPlay, so there's a good chance it will. ATV has it's own YouTube app, so this isn't really a big deal anyway.

Movies/TV stored on your iPod from iTunes. Yes, you can airplay these to the ATV. I've only tried it once, but it seemed like a battery killer. I'd plug the iPod into a charger before trying to AirPlay a full length movie, but the streaming aspect works well.

Oh, make sure he's got at least a "G" Network. "B" is a non starter for streaming.

What do you mean?

I understand the difference of B & G networks, but i'm assuming youre saying G works for streaming while B doesn't?

As long as he can stream Netflix is all that matters to me. He's been wanting to watch Netflix on his big screen rather than on his old laptop or little iPod.

Yes, that's what I meant. Wireless B networks are too slow for streaming AirPlay. In my experience, even audio streaming from iTunes to AirPort Express won't work on a B network.

I don't have an ipod touch but i have an iphone and an ipad. AirPlaying youtube and photos from those devices to the atv2 work.

With the 3rd generation ipod touch, yes you can Airplay Youtube videos and photos on your iPod to the new Apple TV. With Netflix on the iPod, you can currently only send audio with Airplay. However, that's no big deal since the Apple TV already has Netflix on it.

And no Airplay is not a battery killer because the mobile device is not doing either the decoding or displaying of the video, the Apple TV is. Just let the screen sleep while playing if you want to maximize battery life. Apparently the biggest difference is that a Wifi connection is maintained while sleep which isn't nearly as bad on the battery as having to decode video or lighting up the display.
