Have 3 old ATV1's all working fine.

With PSN down and me not wanting to update 360 gold - i was needing a netflix option for the living room. So I decided to pick up a new ATV2.

Now, I know my library is huge:
Roughly 10,000 songs
300 movies
3000 tv shows

But wow...i was not expecting it to load forever when selecting my computer. Everything is wired - the only real variable i guess is I have an external drobo, but with the old ATV's this was never an issue.

Does it get better? Or should I expect it to load forever every time?

Do you have high-quality artwork for all your media? This can cause the library load to take a while. My music (about 7,000 songs) is on my iMac's internal drive, but my videos (140 movies, 100 shorts, about 60 TV episodes) are on a FW800 external drive, and the :apple:tv sometimes drags when showing the movie artwork.

The 1st gen :apple:tv had its own Library file, so it had a relatively quick initial load. The new one doesn't, and only keeps a temporary copy in cache; each time you select a source computer, it checks to see if that computer's iTunes Library file has changed since it last loaded. If so (and if you're adding new media every couple of days, this is likely), it pulls the entire Library file again.

Another thing you may want to try is going wireless for the :apple:tv. The Ethernet port on the new :apple:tv is only 100 Mbit-- it's not Gigabit, and unless you have a very well segmented home network, it's probably slowing everything else on your home network down to 100 Mbit speeds. If you have a WiFi N router relatively close to the :apple:tv and you get good signal, WiFi-N will transfer data to the :apple:tv faster than Ethernet, and everything else can speed back up to Gigabit on the wired network if that's what you have.

My library is twice the size of yours and my ATV 2's work on wireless. I have around 4 seconds of loading library before everything pops up.

Hmmm sometimes my library is sluggish too. Not sure why

lol...I have a huge library and the damn ATV2s loading is rubbish....everytime, and I mean EVERYTIME I change selection in categories, the damn wheel of loading shows up. Absolute pain in the butt. In this the ATV1 was decidedly better.

btw: completely wired network
