ATV2 with optical audio cable—need splitter advice.

I use an HDMI cable to connect my ATV2 to my HDTV. I want to run an optical audio cable from the ATV2 to my tuner, however that spot is taken up by the optical audio cable running from my blu ray player.

I could use a recommendation for a splitter (?) at the tuner to receive both of the optical audio cables (from the ATV2 and the blu ray player neither of which will be used at the same time). Alternative solutions also much appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is considered optimal, but the way I have mine setup is: hdmi from my blu ray and ATV2 go to my LCD and then the optical cable goes from my HDTV to my receiver.

I use a version of this (which is called an optical switch) for a setup similar to yours: my ATV2 is connected to my TV via HDMI, and to my stereo amp via optical (so I can just listen to music without turning on the TV). I also run an optical cable from the TV to the stereo amp (for ATV2 audio when watching movies and for PS3 audio from DVDs, games and such). The amp only has one optical input though, so I picked up one of the doohickies recommended by waw74 and it works like a charm.

I looked into getting an automatic switch (the one posted above is manual) which can intelligently select which optical signal to use, but it was somewhere in the region of £200 if I remember rightly. The manual switch was £5. Walking a couple of metres over to my amp when I want to change from music to movies or vice versa is not forty times worse than having it done automatically in my estimations.

This will work. However, most TVs will not pass through 5.1 surround to their optical out. Most will only output 5.1 from internal sources (over the air tuner, built-in apps, etc.).

Thanks for the info. I did some testing last night and my TV is doing exactly that. I've just ordered one of the adapters linked above from monoprice.
