Ever since I got my first set of original AirPods years ago, I've followed this sequence when I'm done listening to something: I simply remove the AirPods and put them in their case. Simple. The audio stops. I don't have to tap or squeeze the AirPods; I don't touch my phone. Simple: I'm listening to something, I want to stop; I remove the AirPods and put them in the case. Done.

Until now.

With my new AirPods Pro 2, when I do this, SOMETIMES the audio continues, playing now through my iPhone. And since I almost always have my iPhone on mute, I usually don't realize until some time later. Which could mean, for example, that I've unknowingly played through my podcast...and the next one!

What the heck is going on here and how do I stop it? I've taken to checking my phone every time I remove my AirPods, just to be sure the audio has actually stopped, but that's annoying. Has anyone else had this problem and been able to resolve it?

Thanks!

Do you have “Automatic Ear Detection” in the Airpods settings turned on? Audio should automatically pause when you remove them from your ear.

Yes, I do! And that’s what’s so vexing — audio DOES pause when I remove them…and then starts up again once I close the case!

Maybe a sensor malfunctioning? I would try to delete and add them. That’s crazy!

I keep thinking “Am I squeezing them or something when I put them away???” And I’ve been handling them like nitroglycerin for a week and it keeps happening. 😂

But you’re right: I should just delete them and add them in again and see what happens.

Well... I deleted and re-paired them and it happened again. 🤷‍♂️

I've noticed this happening with 3rd-party Bluetooth earphones and my Mac. I was listening to a video on my Mac with the earphones, then turned off the earphones (they have a physical on/off switch). The video stopped playing, then started up again a bit later, I'd say in about a minute or so. I wasn't that bothered by this behavior, so I haven't investigated further. I just trained myself to close the video window if I wanted to make sure it didn't start up again. But yes, I can see how this can be annoying, especially if it didn't behave this way before.
