In case somebody finds this useful:
I went to an Apple Store today, and tested audio conversion on the mid-range iMac. I converted 20 songs from FLAC to True VBR AAC (max encoder quality, target quality 75) using XLD.
Here are the results:
i3 3.2 Ghz: 62 sec
Core Duo 1.83 Ghz: 207 s
Conclusion: the i3 is 334% faster than the Core Duo. Neat!
PS: I looked at two 21.5", one had obvious yellowing, the other had a slight but noticeable yellow tinge.
Looks like I'll tough out some more with my 4.5 years old iMac, as I don't have the time to go through multiple replacements if a problem arises.
