I went into setting and activate lossless just to see what it does and the audio keeps crashing on my AirPods Max.

i know that they don’t support ALAC but can’t my iPhone be smart enough to understand that and outputs AAC?

It’s already weird enough that Apple premium headphone can’t support Apple premium encoding format while competition can, I don’t need my audio crash too

I understand that I can just disable lossless to avoid the issue but then what happens to my HomePods?

It's a bug in a brand new feature that is rolling out incrementally. Not too surprising.

I am having no issues with my AirPods Max, so it's not universal.

Yeah it’s not a major issue and they’ll fix it hopefully
I’m just surprised they let such a major bug in the big new features they teased for couple weeks to 60M users without doing a beta first

Well, if it's happening for you alone, that's not a major bug - it's a bug related to your specific configuration. Maybe others will chime in and the more common it is, the faster it will be fixed.

I’m experiencing the same thing with my AirPod Pro’s. Music will stop playing and sometimes my phone will get bogged down. Closing the music app fixes it. One time I even just got static in the airpods. Disabling lossless seems to be the only resolution. Cool.

So far I haven't had that issue with apple Lossless, I haven't tried activating the hi-res lossless though. No crashes for me yet. Been listening to tracks that say Dolby Atmos and some that say Lossless. Maybe try restarting your phone?

I've not had any issues with Lossless either.. Maybe the OP needs to make an appointment with Apple to have them checked out...

Same issue...worked all day yesterday. Stopped working today even with repeated restarts on iPhone 11 Pro with AirPods Pro.
