i am trying to use the mini-DVI to VGA Adapter for my macbook so that I can watch a dvd...the problem is that when I use the RCA red/white cable, I don't get sound coming from my macbook OR from the TV. when I unplug the cable, audio comes only from the macbook.

what could be the issue here?

What type of plugs are you using for audio, I know you said RCA, but what conversions along the way? I have my MacBook hooked up to my surround sound system using a headphone (stereo) to RCA adapter.

Depending on your TV that you're hooking up to you may need to connect to a specific audio port while using the VGA video, perhaps the digital audio port. May want to check your TV manual.
