Audio-only Airplay?

For some reason a lot of videos that I try to watch via Airplay (from my iPad) only offer audio-Airplay. For instance, I was watching some match highlights in the rugby World Cup app and after a few seconds, the video stopped and it cut back to playing on the iPad, and the Airplay menu then only showed the audio option.

I don't think it's a performance issue, since I Airplay'ed many HD podcasts in iTunes without a stutter, the videos which 'failed' were much lower bitrate. Is it some setting from the video's website/app that must explicitly say "allow video to play via Airplay"?

It's a pity, such a cool feature that rarely works.

There is such a switch that must be enabled for AirPlaying of videos to be allowed. In most cases, if not all, Airplaying of audio is always enabled. I've found that the feature works rather well for almost all types of media I try to use it on. The only one that I've found that doesn't yet work is Netflix.

Ah, thanks. It may well be deliberate then. Much of the video I've been having trouble with has been (legal) net streaming of TV channels, or highlights of sports games etc.

So, there could possibly be rights issues with allowing it to be streamed to a TV. Streaming to a PC/Mac is one thing, but streaming to a TV could cause a conflict if they've sold the rights to that programme in that country already.

Pity. Still, with iOS5, I wonder what'll happen. If you're playing such a video on your iPad, and stream your entire output to the ATV, presumably you'll be able to watch it?

Probably not. Hulu+ notices if you're mirroring and blocks the output to your TV.

I think from a practical perspective, the difference between the current Airplay implementation and the coming IOS5 mirroring function is that currently an App must enable video Airplay, while with Mirroring an App will have to specifically disable the mirroring function to prevent its use. We'll see soon how much of a difference this makes in the availability of video capable Apps.

I've just found the FilmOn Live TV app allows (video) streaming of nearly all channels! This didn't work when I tried it a couple of weeks ago.

The quality was ok, not fantastic, but at least it works.
