Pretty sure I know the answer, just looking to confirm. I had picked up a cheap dock to 3.5mm cable for use with the aux input in my car. Both an old HP iPod and 1G touch work, but my wife's 2G touch and my 3GS do not - audio still plays from the external speaker. Were the pins changed?

Audio out from dock connector

Means it's using the Firewire pin to charge, which the newer devices don't use. You can buy an adapter that'll allow it to work.
Looking for some advice on a similar front re audio out on an iPod Touch 2G.
Got a dock connector cable for car audio and it works fine with older iPod Nano - charges and plays audio just fine. But iPod Touch 2G does neither. Figure it may be the 12v / 5v charging switcheroo that Apple wittily pulled so got a Scoshe Passport passthough charging adapter. And here's the weird part: Cable now charges iPod Touch - but still no audio! Audio still coming from speakers/headphone socket. Yet this same iPod Touch plays audio fine through dock connector on a JBL dock/speaker kit.

I got the pocket dock line out mini usb so I only have to carry one type of cable to charge my iPhone and Blackberry. The line out works great in the car and home stereo. They have all kinds of docks so I am sure there is something for everyone.

Thanks for the (swift) suggestion. Checked that - but it is not really a solution, I'm afraid.
I have a dock cable already hard wired into my car for audio and power and it works fine for partner's older Nano. But my Touch 2G won't work.
(I can also take 3.5mm output from Touch to car stereo if I really must but it is a pain and messes up the dock cradle and I can't charge at same time.)

... on further reflection one of those would help a bit with the audio (being line out) but doesn't solve the power problem without another darn cable.
If only I could get a cable/adapter that would be female dock connector (to connect to car cable) and takes its power only and deliver it to USB to go in to the Sendstation USB socket ... sigh, life is complicated ;-)

How much of a sound quality improvement do you get using line-out from a dock connector to a tape adapter in a car, vs just plugging the tape into the headphone jack and setting the volume correctly? I'm wondering because I'm currently using the headphone jack but am thinking about going line-out instead. I'd have to purchase some kind of adapter that integrates with my cigarette lighter charger that plugs into the dock.
I use theGriffin TuneFlex, and my sound quality is actually significantly worse then just plugging the aux cable into the headphone jack.
Anyone know why???
Well, ok, I did tailgate someone else's thread but it was the same issue - lack of audio out from a Touch 2G dock connector. But as no advice forthcoming, you guys go ahead and debate the merits of different devices and sound "quality". One day perhaps I'll understand why I have no sound to have any "quality".

My guess is the line level is too high for the device. Do you hear distortion, similar to plugging it into the headphone jack then cranking up the volume a bit too high?
THANK YOU! My Monster ipod car charger with line out will not charge my iPhone, due to it charging via firewire. I desperately need a way to charge and have line-out when in my car. I remember seeing this small device and though it would do the trick, but searched and searched yesterday and couldn't find it. Seems like this is exactly what I need. I'll be ordering it.
Anywhere to buy this in a brick and mortar store? Or it it only available at their site?
