Audio output losing connection?

I'm having trouble with a recently purchased 2012 Mini on Ebay and making sure I don't need to do a return.

The audio output stops recognizing that something is hooked up and I believe says something about there being no output control for this output device. When I unplug them and plug them back in it usually recognizes it. Seems to lose it again randomly or after sleep/reboot, etc...
