Audio output problem

Hi, I have been trying to hook up a vinyl turntable to my Mac Pro via a Numark (stereo IO) phono to USB interface without success. I am a new Mac user, so perhaps I am missing something simple.

Here is what Im seeing: on the audio midi setup page the device appears as -
USB audio codec 0in / 2out
USB audio codec 2in / 0out - I selected to use this for sound input (mic icon)

In system preferences/sound -
Input : is set to USB audio codec - input level moving indicating that a signal is being received from my turntable.
output : Audio line out port - but there is no output (all other audio works fine when this port is selected )

To my knowledge no driver is required. Minimum system requirements for the Numark device is Mac OS 9 - I am running 10.7.5.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!

Hi Bfroste. My understanding on your post is that you are not getting any audio or music from your current setup. You may need to connect your turntable to an integrated amplifier or receiver. As far as I know your turntable and Numark USB are "passive" devices. Before I had a music-home theater setup with my Mac Pro. My Mac Pro was connected to an Arcam USB DAC that was connected to a Marantz receiver with large floorstanding speakers and subwoofer. The Arcam USB DAC is plug and play on the Mac Pro

Thanks for the info Macsonic. I may have to resort to an integrated amp as you suggest. I had the same setup working on a windows laptop without problem before I switched to Mac. My investigation continues...

You're welcome. You can actually connect audio equipment to the Mac Pro 3 ways, via analog RCA, Optical Toslink or USB ( usually thru DACs ) With Optical connection the audio is more amplified though I like the warm sound character of the analog RCA. The Mac Pro's sound card is actually good and it's quality is comparable or can rival other music and home theatre setups. I've auditioned and tested other complex setups of various brands in music and home theater including tube amplifiers. Good luck.

You want to connect the Numark ADC section (analog to digital [line in]) to the Mac and then play that signal through the Numark DAC section (digital to analog [line out]).

You say that other audio (system audio) plays back fine through the line out of the Numark. You can't get the audio to play from the line in to the line out.

By default line in and line out have no interaction, they are simply hardware I/O that allows you to interface with software to record or play audio. In order to get music to play from input to output you'll need software that will route it that way.

This software will allow you to do that routing and listen to the line in signal on the line out.

Hi I just came back to this thread after many years and your solution works well. Many thanks for the advice. I have now ditched my amplifier and am going straight from turntable to MAC.
