Hello all, hope everyone is well.

I have a problem with audio on my iMac (10.4.9/G5/PPC) and I really hope someone here can shed some light on it, cos I'm completely flummoxed (now there's a word I've not used for a while!).

I cannot hear any sound from sites such as YouTube, nor can I hear anything when I open files in Quicktime (either locally or online). The files load and I can see them play, but there's no sound. I also can't hear sound clips embedded in sites such as MySpace...although perhaps that's a blessing ;-)

My iTunes is working fine, and I get audio on Mail and other apps, so it isn't a problem with the speakers.

Now, not being super technically gifted about these issues, I don't really know what the problem could be. A friend mentioned something about codecs (does that sound plausible?). I've d/loaded the latest Flash/QT players but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'll buy you a drink.

Cheers x

Really? Something as simple as that? Wow. Very strange!

I don't think I've opened GarageBand for over a year though. You still think that may solve it though?

Opening and closing Garageband resets the Audio MIDI Setup's Output Format to 44,100Hz. There's a bug in OSX which changes this figure sometimes and causes the symptoms you're finding. I'm not saying this will definitely work because you may have the same symptoms from a different cause, but it's worth a shot. :)

Magic, cheers for that. I'll have a go when I get home tonight and let you know how I get on.

Fingers crossed.

Yeah strange things seem to happen with sound. I bought a mac mini on the weekend, and using DVD Player with fibre optic out produced intermittent sound problems. DVD audio would stop playing, so I'd have to pause the movie, then unpause it again for the sound to start up again. Dodgy as hell. Eventually the sound gave up altogether, and FrontRow stopped working (this on a new Mac Mini), and then an infinite beach ball kicked in which required me to force power off the computer. It wasn't a great intro to this machine. I took it back and got a refund. But I don't think your problem is as severe as mine was :)

That may be simultaneously the coolest and stupidest fix to a problem I've ever heard of. Wow!
