Audio question from first time web designer

I'm putting together a web site for my friend's band, and I want audio on the splash page. The file I have is an AAC file I ripped with iTunes from a CD. My question is, what format/bitrate/settings are best for embedded audio, and can I use GarageBand to create such a file?

personally would use around 22khz most people can not hear the difference on built in computer speakers. maybe best to stick to mp3 for most compatability.

I am re-designing my iWeb site and would like to know how/if I can have an audio file play automatically when people visit.

Most people have fairly fast connections now so there shouldnt be any harm in using something 128kbps 44.1khz mp3. however if you want it to load instantly for everybody then you could go lower ..it all depends how much quality you want to sacrafice really? afterall it is a site to promote the band.

I'd also recommend using flash to stream music if you want to do this, and have a "sound off" button or even better "sound ON" button so as not to interupt what the visitor may be listening to already.

as for using garageband, i wouldn't. try Audacity instead, load the song and then export as mp3 with the desired settings.
