I just got the email from Apple saying that the iPad will be available in stores on Friday ... does this mean I can go into a store without pre-ordering and pick one up? Or do I still have to pre-order and wait in line?

Apparently it means they will have it on their 'shelves'. If you're one of the lucky few to walk through the door on opening then you will get one, regardless.

If your going to the Apple store to get it on Friday you better line up early. If your going to another store like Harvey Norman, JB Hifi, Kmart, Big W. Call them in advance to find out if they will have it, retail partners have not been announced in Australia yet.

It's worth checking with authorised Apple shops at various Universities as well.
