Auto brightness question

if I have AB on and adjust the levels through control center, for a movie or something, does it go back to AB at some point or do I have to toggle it off then on again?

auto brightness attempts to hold the level you set it at across all lighting conditions. So, if you manually increase the brightness level while watching a a movie, that becomes you new set point and you device will try to hold that level in different condition.
