This is a bug that varies by device. The phones all auto lock, my 8 plus and 7, at 2 ½ minutes when set to 5. The iPads have new auto lock settings. They go up to 15 minutes. My iPad Air set to 10 and 5 minutes auto lock properly at 10 and 5. My iPad Pro 12.9 when set at 10 locks at 5, when set to 5 it locks at 2 ½ like the phones. It’s very noticeable when you’re used to the longer time frames.

I tested this from the home screen on all devices. I don’t know whether this would vary if an app is left on screen.

It's been like that for iPhones for a little while, at least since iOS 11, if not before. Mainly applies if you are on one of the home screens, most likely just to save some battery basically since they figure you are likely not really using your device if you are simply on a home screen.

I wish I had an iOS 11 device to check but all are on 12 now. I was thinking that my phone seemed to lock early but figured it must be my imagination, then I saw a post here and at Apple mentioning the same thing. That’s when I got my stopwatch involved. A little while ago I did check my iPad Pro with an app open on screen and it did lock at the proper time, 5 minutes. So there is a difference between being on a home screen versus an app.

However I tested my iPad Air and from the home screen it locks at the set interval, not at the halfway mark. So there is a bug somewhere. Or maybe this halfway point only sticks on older devices.
