i guess this is kinda a weird question. but i know the macbook pro (i have the new 2.53 uMBP) has a sort of accelerometer in it. is there anyway to make the display auto rotate from that. may be easier when reading text documents. its more because it would be cool than anything else

It has a sudden motion sensor as opposed to an accelerometer. Tipping the computer on it's side ala the iPhone will do nothing more then cause the hard drive to automatically lock up to prevent it being damaged :)
