(Auto) silence

My iPhone 4 does not go into auto silence mode when I have the headphone jack in. Rather when a phone call comes, it rings through the speaker and the headphones, or if the iPod is not on, through the speaker only. Is this normal? If so, is there a hack to make it go into auto silence when the headphone jack is in so that the ring comes through the headphone only?
