Autocomplete/Ajax and extended ASCII

Hi there. A guy is developing a site for me which has an Autocomplete function but it has problems with extended ascii characters, especially if you cut and paste in them (example José) which impacts on subsequent lookups and this also seems to be generally unhappy with you put them in manually.

He is scratching his head and wearing out Google (and battling a cold). Has anyone else had this problem and/or found out ways to overcome it so I could perhaps tip him in the right direction?
